IPMAT stands for Integrated Programme in Management Aptitude Test. It is a national-level entrance exam conducted for students who want to study management immediately after completing Class 12.
Unlike CAT, which is taken after graduation, IPMAT gives students a chance to start their management education early. After clearing the exam and interview, students get admission into the Integrated Programme in Management (IPM) offered by leading institutes.
The IPM is a five-year programme. The first three years focus on subjects like economics, mathematics, communication skills, psychology, statistics, and business basics. The last two years are similar to an MBA programme, where students study advanced management subjects.
After completing all five years, students receive both an undergraduate degree and an MBA-equivalent management degree from the institute.
Today, IPMAT has become one of the most popular entrance exams for students who want to build a career in business, finance, consulting, marketing, entrepreneurship, or management.
IPMAT is suitable for students from different educational backgrounds.
You can apply if you are:
Students from all streams can appear for IPMAT if they meet the eligibility criteria of the participating institutes.
Many students get confused between IPMAT, CAT, and JIPMAT. Although all three exams are related to management education, they are meant for different stages of a student's academic journey.

If you want to study management immediately after school, IPMAT is the right choice. If you plan to complete your graduation first and then pursue an MBA, CAT is a suitable exam. JIPMAT is another option for students seeking admission to selected IIMs offering the IPM programme.
Understanding the IPMAT exam pattern is one of the first steps towards effective preparation. The exam is conducted online, but the pattern is not the same for every institute. IIM Indore and IIM Rohtak conduct separate entrance exams, while JIPMAT is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) for admission to selected IIMs. Each exam has a different question paper, marking scheme, and section structure.
Students planning to apply to multiple colleges should understand these differences well so that they can prepare according to the syllabus and exam format of each examination.

Before starting your preparation, it is important to understand the IPMAT syllabus. Unlike school examinations, IPMAT does not have a fixed chapter-wise syllabus released by every institute. However, based on previous years' papers and official exam patterns, the questions mainly come from Quantitative Ability, Verbal Ability, Reading Comprehension, and Logical Reasoning (for IPMAT Rohtak and JIPMAT).
The syllabus tests your mathematical ability, English language skills, logical thinking, and problem-solving ability. Students from every stream should prepare all sections because each carries significant weight in the final score.
